Vocabulary: Phrasal Verbs and Idioms


On the Run
When on the run, Harry, Ron and Hermione had to weather much inclement weather.  Once, when they were in the Forest of Dean, they had to endure a downpour that went for days on end. After the torrential rains, it was some days before it cleared up and they were then able to move on at last to another hiding place.

It was up north and winter was approaching. The weather was becoming colder by the day and they had to take care lest they ran short of the food they had been living off since their last stealthy visit to a suburb where Ron had managed to lay his hands on enough to suffice them for some time.  Here, at the foot of a towering mountain that overshadowed others surrounding it, it was not long before it started to snow. They continued to keep at their quest nevertheless. They considered getting to Albania--this suggestion was kept bringing up by Ron--but as Hermione kept reminding them, it wouldn't have made a lot of sense and the idea was ever in abeyance...

Meanwhile, Harry liked to be left to his own devices: lately, he'd often found himself brooding and staring blankly into the distance and he had to keep reminding himself that he had to keep calamity at bay.

“What’re you up to, Harry?” said Hermione one day. “Oh, nothing! Nothing in particular—what’s up with you? Have you been able to find anything further?” “Ron and I have been going through everything that we’ve come to know so far…but I have this feeling that there’s something amiss—may be we need to go over my notes once again and I need us all to do that together…”

“Well, sure we can go over it together, let’s do it after some time—what’s Ron doing? Is he still…?” Hermione said nothing, but she raised her eyebrows, grimaced and went away.

There came a time during their stay here when they couldn't get much food to eat since they were snowed in. Eventually, the weather...
